Best Cheap Companies For 2014

Reed Hastings wants Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX  ) investing in more original series. And why not? House of Cards is already a success, and early signs point to a similarly strong showing for the horror series Hemlock Grove.

Trouble is, this sort of content doesn't come cheap. In a manifesto posted to Netflix's investor-relations site recently, Hastings confessed that original program development is "cash-intensive" and that producing more shows is likely to mean raising money from investors or partners:

As we expand Originals, they will consume cash. Since we are otherwise using domestic profits to fund international markets, we will raise capital as needed to fund the growth of Originals.

And that, Fool, is where Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) comes in. The Mac maker should be investing in Netflix original programming.

As for specific stocks, the Goldman analysts issued five ratings changes:

Upgrade CONSOL Energy to Buy given strong production growth at its E&P segment, improving cash flow from the coal business and potential for asset sales/restructuring to help realize its SOTP value. Downgrade Arch Coal to Sell due to high leverage, peak valuations and low free cash flow levels. Neutral Ratings on Cloud Peal Energy (CLD), Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) and Walt Energy (WLT): Goldman downgrade Cloud to a Neutral given a lower production outlook and a reduced PRB price forecast. The firm upgraded Alpha and Walt to Neutral from Sell, predicting that met coal prices have bottomed.

Arch Coal has fallen 5.7% to day to $4.26, followed by Cloud Pearl, down 3.4% to $14.68, and a 3% drop by Walt Energy to $14.10. Alpha Natural dropped 2.8% to $6.10. And CONSOL fell 0.9% to $33.46.

At the same time, there are a few glimmers of hope for the coal industry. Cloud Peak Energy's (NYSE: CLD  ) balance sheet shows some characteristics that could help it survive another rough patch for coal. It may not be a great balance sheet overall, but it's certainly better than many others in the space. Tune into the following video to get Fool.com contributors Tyler Crowe and Aimee Duffy's take on a couple other coal companies that either look like they are headed for a big fall or have stronger balance sheets to weather the storm.

But a few Dow stocks didn't join in the celebration. The biggest decliner was UnitedHealth (NYSE: UNH  ) , which dropped more than 1% on news from the Congressional Budget Office that Obamacare might bring in a smaller number of uninsured Americans onto insurance company rolls through subsidies or expansions of Medicaid expansions than previously expected. With states no longer having to participate in Medicaid expansion, the estimate has fallen by more than a quarter since early CBO estimates two years ago, and that's bad news for insurers that have hoped that more customers would offset higher costs under Obamacare's other provisions.

  • [By Sean Williams]

The nation's largest health insurer, UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH  ) , also spiked 6.5% higher after reporting its second-quarter results. Fairly consistent with what we saw last quarter, UnitedHealth came in a tad light on the revenue side of its business than Wall Street had expected -- $30.4 billion versus $30.5 billion -- but tight cost controls helped push its $1.40 in EPS well past the $1.25 that the Street had forecast. UnitedHealth can attribute the majority of its earnings strength to strong commercial health-insurance enrollment. Looking forward, I like UnitedHealth's chances of heading higher, presuming the implementation of Obamacare goes off without too many hitches.

Our bullishness of oil is well documented. The fact that we also like the NGL play in the shales should be no surprise either. These two facts are part of the reason we warmed up to Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) long-term when we did. Admittedly it was not a 'conviction buy' type of call, but we laid out the case for why we liked this diversified miner over other names and ironically the roadmap we laid out for the stock to follow is taking place. Yes, it is taking place much quicker than we anticipated but the fact of the matter is that oil and natural gas prices have remained steady as a whole and the next leg of copper and then gold seems to be taking place. The strength in copper prices has surprised us as we have watched the move over the past few weeks, but the economic data out of China has improved dramatically.
