Best Semiconductor Companies To Watch For 2014

By George Putnam

Technology investors used to say hen Intel Intel sneezes, the semiconductor sector catches a cold. While it is still true that many chip stocks still more or less follow Intel lead, there are now so many niche uses for integrated circuits (which is the more modern name for what used to be called semiconductors) that Intel value as a bellwether has become questionable. Intel performance is closely tied to the personal computer market while other circuit makers serve largely separate niches from cell phones to game consoles to cameras and other devices.

Nonetheless, in an otherwise very healthy market, Intel has been sneezing quite a lot recently, with its stock down about 8% since the beginning of 2012 compared to a 30% gain for the S&P 500. As a result, many of the other chip stocks have been suffering as well.

Public companies leveraging their patent portfolios, (aka "patent plays"), are getting the market's attention. Companies such as Vringo (VRNG), ParkerVision (PRKR), MGT Capital (MGT), Worlds Inc. (WDDD.OB) and others have presented trading opportunities due to their volatility while retaining the chance for a big payoff to those investors who stay the course. Yet there exist viable patent plays that are still undiscovered. Some of these so called "plays," which are not getting enough attention, are actually real companies making and selling real products or services in contrast to pure patent monetization companies. Some known examples are Single Touch Interactive (SITO.OB) and Blue Calypso (BCYP.OB). This article is focused on another one of these patent plays, On Track Innovations Ltd. (OTIV).

One under-$10 technology player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a major breakout trade is On Track Innovations (OTIV), which designs, develops and markets contactless microprocessor-based smart card solutions to customers in Africa, Europe, the Far East, the Americas and Israel. This stock has been red hot over the last three months, with shares up a whopping 134%.

If you take a look at the chart for On Track Innovations, you'll notice that this stock has been trending sideways and consolidating over the last month and change, with shares moving between $2.70 on the downside and $3.74 on the upside. Shares of OTIV have now started to spike higher off some near-term support at $3 a share and it's quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in OTIV if it manages to break out above its 52-week high at $3.74 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average volume of 626,538 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then OTIV will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $4.50 to $5.50 a share.

Traders can look to buy OTIV off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits just below some key near-term support levels at $3.20 or at $3 a share. One can also buy OTIV off strength once it starts to clear its 52-week high at $3.74 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Gordon Moore and Robert Noyce were part of the founding team behind Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS  ) in 1957. In 11 years, the two men would forge legendary hardware-engineering careers. They developed the first practical integrated circuits, created the most widely recognized "law" of computing power, and built the chips that helped man land on the moon. But after 11 years, the two chip makers left the plodding Fairchild behind for even greater ambitions. On July 18, 1968, they founded Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) , a company that would quickly and vastly eclipse their former employer.

British radar engineer Geoffrey Dummer first made public the concept of integrated circuits on May 7, 1952. This was still years before practical transistor-based electronics would hit the consumer market, but the notion caught on with two very talented engineers: Robert Noyce, founder of Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS  ) , and Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments. Working independently, the two men would help build the entire semiconductor industry from the ground up, using Dummer's concepts as a starting point.

Inside China, a crash below the $50 barrier has unleashed a massive tablet boom. How are companies doing this? For one, local processor companies have created "good enough" designs that sell for a fraction of the price of high-end designs fromNVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA  ) andQualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM  ) . On its budget-priced Slate 7, HP used a design from Chinese chip designer Rockchip. When HP tried to sell its TouchPad tablet for prices starting at $500 in 2011, it used a Qualcomm design. Perversely, low-cost tablets are also cutting costs by salvaging memory from PCs.

I may regret suggesting this (maybe even today), but perhaps the market is stronger than thought. The underlying fundamental are good – earnings, cash-flow, debt levels, cash, dividends, but the perception is not. Fund and money managers have stayed in the market, with the joke being that they are too scared to be out of it, and new money has not significantly come in, even as markets have set new highs. It is going to take an event to get either of these two to change their course but at this point Portugal does not appear to do it for fund managers. Earnings season starts tomorrow with the banks (Wells Fargo (WFC)), with Monday being Citigroup (C), Tuesday JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Goldman Sachs (GS), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), and Yahoo (YHOO) and Intel (INTC) after the close. If we do better than the current high expectations call for, we could move over the 2K and back over 17K level and stay there, at least for through earnings season, however, if they disappoint, we could get that correction we keep talking (and talking, and talking) about.

The decliners keep greed in check while reminding us about the risks of the equity markets. Let's go over some of last week's best and worst performers. Regulus Therapeutics (RGLS) -- Up 161 percent last week Last week's biggest winner was a biotech upstart that got welcome news on a potential hepatitis C treatment. Regulus Therapeutics is showing that patients receiving a single injection of its drug are reporting lower viral loads a month later. There are still plenty of regulatory hurdles to clear, but it's certainly encouraging. Select Comfort (SCSS) -- Up 21 percent last week Shares of Select Comfort moved higher after it announced blowout quarterly results. The company behind the Sleep Number air-chambered mattresses saw net sales and earnings per share climb 23 percent and 22 percent, respectively. Select Comfort's strong performance was fueled by an impressive 16 percent spike in comparable-store sales. The favorable momentum is going to linger: Select Comfort is boosting its guidance for the entire year. Six Flags (SIX) -- Up 16 percent last week It was a summer of thrills at Six Flags. Shares of the regional amusement park operator rose like a coaster on a chain lift after it announced better-than-expected revenue growth. The report was encouraging enough for Six Flags to boost its dividend. The stock is now yielding a hearty 5.3 percent. Boulder Brands (BDBD) -- Down 31 percent last week Shares of Boulder Brands lost nearly a third of their value after the food company behind Smart Balance buttery spreads and EVOL frozen entrees warned of a soft holiday quarter. This isn't going to be a well-received idea, given how bullish the stock appears to be at this time, but EDAP TMS S.A. (NASDAQ:EDAP) is a sell. Up 82% since the end of May, EDAP is ripe for a pullback, and may have reached the bearish pivot point as of today.

Last week, yours truly posed the unpopular (though largely ignored) premise that EDAP TMS S.A. (NASDAQ:EDAP) was poised to tumble. It wasn't anything personal, nor was it a judgment call on the merits of the company. It was simply a trading-based call, observing how the rally EDAP was enjoying at the time appeared to be running out of gas, and there was no floor to halt any pullback.

There are an immeasurable number of companies that rely on discounting to drive customer traffic. One notable example we've covered frequently is teen-clothing retailer Aeropostale (NYSE: ARO  ) . When economic times are booming, its inventory moves quickly enough that its deep discounts go unnoticed. The past few years, though, have been difficult, with the company unable to move unwanted merchandise even at steep discounts.

Despite a recovering U.S. economy, teenage unemployment remains high. Teen apparel retailers such as Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (ANF) and Aeropostale Inc. (ARO) seek to continue growing in this unfavorable macroeconomic scenario, yet they face fierce competition. As of late, both these firms have had a hard time connecting with customers due to merchandising missteps, which have placed their business in a tough spot.

Don't get me wrong - it's fun to be right. There's such a thing as being too right (or at least too right, too fast) though, and when that happens, the smart thing to do is, well do something about it. Case in point? I was right yesterday about Neurometrix Inc. (NASDAQ:NURO). I suggested the stock was already in the midst of a breakout, and NURO was poised to soar. I didn't count on this morning's big jump and subsequent gap, however, so now that my risk of continuing to hold it is as big as my potential reward from here, I and anybody else who followed my lead has a tough decision to make... though I've already made mine.

Small cap healthcare information stocks Everyday Health Inc (NYSE: EVDY), Foundation Medicine Inc (NASDAQ: FMI) and CollabRx Inc (NASDAQ: CLRX) help consumers and healthcare professionals deal with the increasing amount of information overload that comes with treating or figuring out how to treat patients.

They say you're known by the caliber of company you keep. If that's true for stocks (and it is), then CollabRx Inc. (NASDAQ:CLRX) has a lot to be proud of with its new partnership with Affymetrix, Inc. (NASDAQ:AFFX). On the flipside, Affymetrix should be honored it's inked a deal with CollabRx. In a combination that hasn't been topped since peanut butter and chocolate hooked up to form a Reese's cup, AFFX and CLRX help bring out the best in each other.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

On the surface it's the kind of thing the market doesn't want to see. In reality though, CollabRx Inc. (NASDAQ:CLRX) will be far better off - and far batter positioned to reward shareholders - by doing what needs to be done in order to continue capitalizing on the opportunity it has in front of it. And what exactly did CLRX do? It raised some money by shares it had sitting on the shelf.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Eat your heart out Foundation Medicine Inc. (NASDAQ:FMI). And WebMD Health Corp. (NASDAQ:WBMD)? Don't even bother trying. CollabRx Inc. (NASDAQ:CLRX) has built a better mousetrap, and if yesterday's announcement is a sign of things to come, CLRX could prove to be a very compelling investment.

Top Growth Companies To Watch In Right Now

Troubling headlines continue to plague upscale athletic-wear makerLululemon Athletica (LULU), but that’s done little to deter analysts from recommending its shares.

This morning, Nomura Robert Drbul joined the bullish team when he initiated Lululemon at Buy with a $70 price target, citing the current price decline (30% over the past year) as the perfect entry point. He explains:

We believe the brand is strong and estimate the company can double revenues to $3 billion over the next five to seven years. We expect this growth to come from: a recovery in comps, U.S. store expansion, e-commerce, and an expansion of international markets. We believe lululemon can nearly double its U.S. store base footprint to 300 stores (from 166 currently) over the next five to seven years; its international potential remains largely untapped. In addition, we see opportunity to increase productivity in U.S. stores, which generate nearly $1,800 per square foot, compared with Canada, where stores generate close to $2,750- $3,000 per square foot.

People tastes and preferences keep changing with the changing times. So was the case with the footwear industry, when Crocs(CROX) fancy and new style shoes took over the market. Customers became highly fascinated with the new style of resin-molded shoes which came in a variety of bright colors. It became a fashion statement. However, a few years later, this fascination started to fade away as customers got bored of the same old style. Crocsfootwear became tacky for the same lot of customers. This resulted in sharp decline in the retailersrevenue.

Advisors' Opinion:

Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ: ISRG  ) reporteddouble-digit sales growth and that first-quarter profits rose 32%. Despite the strong quarter, shares fell on Friday. In this segment, our analysts talk about Intuitive Surgical's business and how big a red flag the company's FDA investigation is for investors.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Intuitive Surgical (ISRG) has still not discovered the da Vinci code.

That would be its da Vinci robotic surgery device, which was responsible for a big of today’s disappointing financial report from Intuitive surgical. It reported a profit of $3.99–besting analyst forecasts for $3.40–but revenue plunged to $499 million, well below the $526 million forecast. Intuitive sold just 101 da Vinci systems, Bloombergsays, down from 155 a year ago.

It wasn’t just da Vinci that disappointed, however. Canaccord Genuity’s Jason Mills and Jeffrey Chu sum up troubling quarter:

Investors hoping management would call the bottom in falling procedure growth rates were disappointed Thursday evening as issues that have plagued ISRG over the past few quarters could stick around for the foreseeable future, in our view. Slower growth in benign GYN, uncertainty in hospital capital spending (which ISRG attributed to the Affordable Care Act, with which we do not concur), and increased capacity in the U.S. installed base have made predicting robotic system sales particularly difficult. Commentary from management suggests investors should continue to expect lumpiness in the business in the near term. As a result of uncertainty, management narrowed its fullyear sales and procedure growth expectations.

Raymond James analysts Lawrence Keusch and Konstantin Tcherepachenets see a turnaround taking quarters:

Although we see long-term growth for robotic surgery, especially as the company technology evolves to capture less complex procedures more cost effectively, we believe that it will take several quarters to soak up the excess capacity and drive an improvement in system sales. We remain on the sidelines.

Intuitive Surgical has fallen 4.4% to $381.39 today, but doesn’t seem to be having much of an impact on comparable companies. Hologic (HOLX) has ticked up 0.2% to $22.06, Danaher (DHR) has fallen -.4% to $72.05 an

What: Shares of robotic surgery system specialist Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ: ISRG  ) plunged yet again on Friday after it issued guidance that disappointed Wall Street, and said that the FDA had issued a warning letter over one of its facilities.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Shares of Intuitive Surgical (ISRG) have jumped this morning after the maker of surgical robots announced that it would buy back $1 billion dollars of its shares from Goldman Sachs (GS).

ISI Group’s Vijay Kumar calls the buyback “huge for investors.” He explains why:

This is a huge positive for shareholders, and reiterates our belief in the long term opportunity for robotic surgery. Recall that the company reiterated its commitment to grow OpEx by 12-15% on its 1Q call (April 22) while lowering procedure estimates by ~500bps at the mid-point, implying its belief in new product opportunity and willingness to spend. We had urged management…to back this belief by share repurchases and send a proactive message to the Street. We are encouraged to see this announcement, and would further note that our recent channel checks on the new Xi product has been very positive. Given this, we reiterate our Strong Buy rating of [Intuitive Surgical] shares.

…[Intuitive Surgical] could repurchase ~2-2.8MM of shares, which implies earnings accretion by ~5-7% (and consequently expect shares to be up at least ~7%).

Shares of Intuitive Surgical have gained 1.7% to $365.24 at 2:04 p.m., while Goldman Sachs has dropped 1% to $158.81.

For those looking to invest in real estate stocks, highly recommended is the Dr. Housing Bubble blog. In a recent posting, the "Dr." pointed out that there was a "Lost Generation" when it came to household income. That has not happened for those investing in staffing industry stocks such as Paychex (NASDAQ: PAYX), Robert Half International (NYSE: RHI), TrueBlue, Inc. (NYSE: TBI), and Labor SMART (OTCBB: LTNC).

  • [By idahansen]

The entire demand labor industry should do well as the US Department of Labor just reported that 169,000 more jobs were added to the American economy. The more work there is, the more demand there is for the services of staffing solutions firms such as Labor SMART, Paychex (NASDAQ: PAYX), TrueBlue (NYSE: TBI), and Robert Half International (NYSE: RHI).

Even though the stock market rallied on Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's remarks with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (NYSE: DIA) and Standard & Poor's 500 Index (NYSE: SPY) surging, the long term winners will be stocks in the staffing industry such as Paychex(NASDAQ: PAYX), TrueBlue (NYSE: TBI), Robert Half (NYSE: RHI), and Labor SMART (OTCBB: LTNC).
