Top 10 Warren Buffett Stocks For 2014

Berkshire Hathaway’s (BRK-B) Warren Buffett is an investing legend, so it’s little wonder nearly everyone wants to know his secret. Sadly, Buffett’s success is driven by traits that are probably out of reach for you and me: His focus, intelligence, patience, and nowadays, even his reputation.

We can, however, look for stocks that have the characteristics that Buffett looks for at Berkshire Hathaway–and ISI Group’s Pankaj Patel has made it even easier by putting together a screen that creates a portfolio from the characteristics Buffett looks for. Patel explains:

To construct this portfolio we adapt the acquisition criteria of Berkshire Hathaway into a series of quantitative rules. Berkshire Hathaway has a unique long-term focus on stock selection and their impressive performance is well documented. The criteria for our stock selection portfolio are above average return on equity (greater than 15%), long-term debt to equity less than 50%, improving profit margin (operating and net), a market value greater than $250 mil, and a Relative Value factor rank of 8 or 9.

Looking for a couple of long (bullish) trading ideas on a day when the market is dragging pretty much everything lower? There are two names that fit the bill...CombiMatrix Corp. (NASDAQ:CBMX) and Banro Corporation (NYSEMKT:BAA). CBMX is an "almost" small cap stock that deserves a place on your watchlist while we wait for it to do one more thing. Meanwhile, BAA is something worth going ahead and taking a swing on now, not despite the market's tumble, but because of it.

It is surreal to see how depressed Russian shares are, in general. They are still underwater since 2007, as measured by the Market Vectors Russia ETF (RSX) charted above vs. the S&P 500 ETF (SPY). The Russian economy has grown significantly since then, and so have the earnings and revenues of the mainstream Russian companies.

For one thing, it means less trading. SAC Capital alone often made up around 3% of theaverage daily trading on the NYSE. The restriction of inside information, legal or not, has diminished trading volume in several areas of the market. When Thomson Reuters stopped selling early access to the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment surveyto high frequency traders, the pre-market volume in the S&P 500 Index ETF (NYSE: SPY) dropped from 200,000 shares in a 10-millisecond window to 400 shares.
