Best Supermarket Stocks To Watch Right Now

The U.S. indices struggled to find an identity early in today’s trading, as was the case with stocks from around the globe. With a lack of economic data, big name earnings, or any other catalysts to push stocks higher or lower today, stocks were at mercy of traders’ sentiment, which eventually turned bearish. As such, the major indices finished slightly lower by the end of the day’s choppy trading, with the S&P 500 ending a 7-day winning streak.

Stocks on the Rise

Shares of supermarket operator Kroger (KR) rallied today after the company posted second quarter earnings that pleased investors. Dunkin Brands (DNKN) shares saw a bit of a pop as well after it announced that it signed agreements with franchise groups in the U.K. to open Dunkin Donuts stores across the pond. Furthermore, Linn Energy (LINE) shares were in positive territory after it announced the acquisition of some oil and gas properties in the Permian Basin. Disney (DIS) shares saw a pop today also following an intraday report that it would buyback $6 billion to $8 billion worth of shares.

Global Hunter also lowered its rating on Natural Gas Services Group (NGS) and Vantage Drilling (VTG). Global Hunter writes:

The market seems to be showing fatigue particularly with positive onshore oil service data points that may nolonger seem incremental. Investors have become especially focused on potential issues and macro concerns. We believe this phaseof enhanced risk perceptions will pass and still recommend owning selective stocks based on attractive valuations and healthyfundamentals. Of the 16 oilfield services companies having reported their quarters to date, the share price changes have at timesbeen difficult to tie to specific results. … Five of the 12 companies who have beaten earnings expectations have seen their share prices drop on the day, including Basic Energy Services (BAS) (-9.0%), Baker Hughes (BHI) (-2.5%), National Oilwell Varco (NOV) (-1.5%), Oceaneering (OII) (-4.2%), and Schlumberger (SLB) (-2.0%). Other stocks beating expectations have traded higher as expected, including Cameron International (CAM) (+4.1%), FMC Technologies (FTI) (+3.1%), Mitcham Industries (MIND) (+3.8%), Nabors Industries (NBR) (+1.2%), Patterson-UTI Energy (PTEN) (+1.8%), RPC (RES) (+8.4%), and Weatherford International (WFT) (+2.3%). Companies which have missed have universally seen their share prices decline, including Diamond Offshore Drilling (DO) (-4.3%), Gulfmark Offshore (GLF) (-0.1%), and Hercules Offshore (HERO) (-6.9%). Halliburton (HAL) was in line and flat on the day.

Margins matter. The more Jack Henry & Associates (Nasdaq: JKHY  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Jack Henry & Associates's competitive position could be.

For U.S. Bancorp, a fine of this magnitude is nothing more than a slap on the wrist. However, it is a harbinger for change in how regulators view third-party relationships. Banks will now have to think long and hard about outsourcing, even to reputable companies like Jack Henry and Associates (NASDAQ: JKHY  ) and Fiserv (NASDAQ: FISV  ) .

It doesn't matter if the bank is a mega bank like Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) , a regional player like BB&T (NYSE: BBT  ) , or a third-party software provider like Jack Henry and Associates (NASDAQ: JKHY  ) , the capabilities and usability of online banking services are noticeably stuck in the mud.
