10 Best Cheap Stocks To Invest In 2014

NEW YORK (AP) -- Technology created an energy revolution over the past decade -- just not the one we expected.

By now, cars were supposed to be running on fuel made from plant waste or algae -- or powered by hydrogen or cheap batteries that burned nothing at all. Electricity would be generated with solar panels and wind turbines. When the sun didn't shine or the wind didn't blow, power would flow out of batteries the size of tractor-trailers.

Fossil fuels? They were going to be expensive and scarce, relics of an earlier, dirtier age.

But in the race to conquer energy technology, Old Energy is winning.

Oil companies big and small have used technology to find a bounty of oil and natural gas so large that worries about running out have melted away. New imaging technologies let drillers find oil and gas trapped miles underground and undersea. Oil rigs "walk" from one drill site to the next. And engineers in Houston use remote-controlled equipment to drill for gas in Pennsylvania.

As for specific stocks, the Goldman analysts issued five ratings changes:

Upgrade CONSOL Energy to Buy given strong production growth at its E&P segment, improving cash flow from the coal business and potential for asset sales/restructuring to help realize its SOTP value. Downgrade Arch Coal to Sell due to high leverage, peak valuations and low free cash flow levels. Neutral Ratings on Cloud Peal Energy (CLD), Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) and Walt Energy (WLT): Goldman downgrade Cloud to a Neutral given a lower production outlook and a reduced PRB price forecast. The firm upgraded Alpha and Walt to Neutral from Sell, predicting that met coal prices have bottomed.

Arch Coal has fallen 5.7% to day to $4.26, followed by Cloud Pearl, down 3.4% to $14.68, and a 3% drop by Walt Energy to $14.10. Alpha Natural dropped 2.8% to $6.10. And CONSOL fell 0.9% to $33.46.

The price of natural gas, however, has dropped 0.4% today, and wouldn’t you know it, coal stocks are weak. Cloud Peak Energy (CLD) has dropped 4.2% to $16.15, while Peabody Energy (BTU) has fallen 2.9% to $17.27. Arch Coal (ACI) is off 1.3% at $4.45, Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) has declined 1.4% to $5.76 and Consol Energy (CNX) has dipped 0.7% to $31.35.

Until mid-2014 the best performers had been the thermal producers Alliance Resource Partners (ARLP) Cloud Peak Energy (CLD) and Consol Energy (CNX), but since nat gas prices disappointed in July, there no safe equity in the sector. With booming supplies of nat gas, a demand still playing catch up, without a cold winter gas prices could be weak into 2015.

    1. Sirius XM will close higher on the week
Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI  ) reports on Tuesday morning, and it's easy to bank on a strong report. Auto sales have been strong in recent months, and that's the lifeblood of new subscribers for the satellite-radio provider. Sirius XM has also been providing conservative guidance in recent quarters, leading to blowout performances that force the media giant to revise its outlook higher.

Shares of Tesla have gained 6.2% to $152.23 on the news, putting it up 20% so far in December. If it holds onto these gains, it would be Tesla’s biggest rise since August, when it gained 26%. It also comes as more traditional automakers struggle, as Ford Motor (F) has dropped 11% in December, Toyota Motor (TM) has fallen 5.3% and Honda Motor (HMC) has dipped 3.1%. General Motors (GM) has gained 5.7% this month.

Here in North America, the F-150 pickup and its Super Duty siblings are Ford's (NYSE: F  ) bread and butter -- and they've been posting big sales gains lately, thanks to surges in the construction and oil markets. Now, a related segment -- commercial vans -- is showing signs of heating up, and Ford's small Transit Connect is posting big gains as well.

  • [By John Rosevear]

Why? Because it isn't up to snuff. Specifically, it isn't all that competitive with Ford's (NYSE: F  ) white-hot Fusion sedan and Honda's (NYSE: HMC  ) hot-selling new Accord, both of which are stealing sales in a big way from the longtime class-leader, Toyota's (NYSE: TM  ) Camry and from the Malibu.

  • [By Dan Caplinger] Ford (ticker: F) stands alone among the Big Three automakers in not having to take a bailout from the federal government in the aftermath of the financial crisis. The success that Ford had in recovering without assistance allowed Ford to become the dividend giant of the U.S. auto industry, with the restoration of its dividend in early 2012 for the first time in more than five years marking a big step in its comeback. By contrast, neither General Motors(NYSE: GM ) nor Tesla Motors (NASDAQ: TSLA ) pays a dividend at all, and while General Motors could put itself in position to make a quarterly payout in the near future, Tesla has too much growth potential to consider returning any eventual profits to shareholders in the near future.

David Tulis/AP It's beginning to look a lot like ... the day after Christmas? On the day before Christmas, retailers turned shoppers' attention to the day after the holiday. Amazon.com (AMZN) already is offering "after Christmas" deals of up to 70 percent off clothes and 60 percent off some electronics. Old Navy (GPS) is running TV ads that its "after-holiday sale starts early" with discounts of up to 75 percent off. And CVS (CVS) was selling a wine cabinet for $10 off at $39.99 and three fleece throws for $9.99 on Christmas Eve. Heather Nadler, 38, stopped by the CVS in Decatur, Ga., on Tuesday, searching for stuffed animals for her children. But she still plans to hit up sales after Christmas. "I'll probably start shopping for me at that point," she said. Stores usually wait until after Christmas to offer discounts of up to 70 percent or more on holiday merchandise that didn't sell. But Americans who are still worried about the economy have held tightly to their purse strings this year, and store sales have fallen for the past three consecutive weeks. The pre-Christmas deals come as retailers are feeling pressure to attract Americans into stores during the final week of what's typically the busiest shopping period of the year. The two-month stretch that begins on Nov. 1 is important because retailers can make up to 40 percent of their annual sales during that time. Sales at U.S. stores dropped 3.1 percent to $42.7 billion for the week that ended on Sunday compared with the same week last year, according to ShopperTrak, which tracks data at 40,000 locations. That follows a decline of 2.9 percent and 0.8 percent during the first and second weeks of the month, respectively. Stores had a problem even getting Americans into stores, let alone getting them to spend. The number of shoppers fell 21.2 percent during the week that ended on Sunday, according to ShopperTrak. In the fourth quarter, he increased his holding by 50%, adding 100,000 shares at about $37 per share. CVS share price has actually increased more than 20% in the last year, and more than 21% in the fourth quarter alone.

Record-setting third-quarter earnings results, announced Nov. 3, 2011, contributed to the rise. Net revenues increased 12.5% to a record $26.7 billion. Revenues in its Pharmacy Services segment rose 25.8% to $14.8 billion, due primarily with the addition of a previously unannounced, long-term contract with Aetna Inc., and its acquisition of the Medicare prescription drug business of Universal American Corp. in the second quarter of 2011.

In the first nine months of 2011, the company also returned over $3 billion to shareholders in the form of dividends and share repurchases.
