Hot US Companies To Invest In Right Now

The December jobs report has sparked a fresh argument on an issue as old as the recovery: whether unemployment is dropping because of new jobs, or because people have stopped looking.

Released Friday, the government's report showed the unemployment rate falling to 6.7%. But it estimated the U.S. labor force shrank by 347,000 last month while only 74,000 new jobs were added. Just 62.8% of adults were working or sought jobs, tied for the lowest share since 1978.

For the year, the labor force shrank by nearly 550,000 workers to about 154.9 million marking only the third year since 1948 when the U.S. workforce declined on an annual basis.

To skeptical economists like Keith Hall of George Mason University, that means all of 2013's drop in the unemployment rate was because fewer people were looking. Only 2.2 million jobs were added last year.

Visteon (NYSE: VC  ) reported earnings on May 9. Here are the numbers you need to know.

    The 10-second takeaway
For the quarter ended March 31 (Q1), Visteon beat expectations on revenues and crushed expectations on earnings per share.

  • [By David Sterman]

Auto parts maker Visteon (NYSE: VC) clearly embodies the new thinking about share buybacks. The company announced plans last month to sell its $1.5 billion stake in a joint venture with a Chinese partner. Visteon could have looked to pay down debt or make an acquisition, or simply keep the ($1.2 billion after-tax) proceeds. Instead, almost all of the money will go toward a share buyback that might reduce shares outstanding by 25%.

One place to look for it this week has been in the ADRs, the New York traded ADRs, American Depository Receipts of GOL. One of the two big Brazilian airlines is the only one that is not owned by somebody else. The symbol is (GOL). It went up like 9.5% on October 21; it went up about 4.5% on October 22, pulled back a tiny little bit on October 23, but still a major, major move. This is basically on the effect of a weaker dollar versus the Brazilian real, since GOL is basically a domestic airline and almost all their revenue is denominated in real, which means that when the real gets cheap against the dollar, it hurts their revenue, especially because most of their costs, a lot of their costs, probably about 80% of their costs are denominated in dollars. A strong dollar means what they pay for oil, kerosene, jet fuel, what they pay for debt service, what they pay on airplane leases, all denominated in dollars, goes up, so GOL has been getting hammered on this. The reversal of this is a big deal for the stock.

One airline player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes (GOL), through its subsidiaries, engages in the air transportation of passengers, cargo, and mailbags in Latin America. This stock has been hammered by the bears so far in 2013, with shares off by 42%.

If you look at the chart for Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong for the last two months, with shares moving higher from its low of $2.74 to its recent high of $3.83 a share. During that uptrend, shares of GOL have been mostly making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. Shares of GOL just recently formed a double bottom above its 50-day moving average at $3.57 to $3.55 a share. Shares of GOL are now starting to spike higher above those support levels and move within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in GOL if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.83 to $4.14 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 2.19 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then GOL will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance level at its 200-day moving average of $5.30 a share to $6 a share.

Traders can look to buy GOL off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average of $3.46 a share. One can also buy GOL off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Shares of Rockwell Collins (COL) have rebounded today after selling off yesterday on news that it would make a billion dollar acquisition.

    AFP

Yesterday, Rockwell Collins said it would purchase Arinc from the Carlyle Group for $1.4 billion, as the U.S. defense company seeks to bolster its air communications business. Rockwell’s stock fell 1.5% yesterday on the news.

Sterne Agee, however, came out in support of the deal today. Analysts Peter Arment and Josh Sullivan note that the deal, while expensive, will go a long way towards boosting the company’s aerospace business in the years to come. They write:

The purchase price of $1.4 billion results in an estimated transaction multiple of ~12x-13x 2013 EBITDA, which is at the very high end of the range of transaction multiples for aerospace M&A deals. However, the scarcity value of the type of business of ARINC coupled with the growing theme of connectivity in aviation warrants a more strategic valuation…

With an improving outlook with aerospace profits becoming 60% of the mix by FY15 vs. 50% today, COL can return to supporting a higher valuation.

The analysts are such big fans of the deal, that they raised Rockwell Collins to a Buy from Neutral.

The credit rating firms are not so thrilled by the deal, which will be financed entirely with debt. Yesterday, Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s both said they would reevaluate their debt ratings for Rockwell Collins, and this morning Fitch followed suit by placing it on watch for a downgrade. Fitch said:

Fitch’s primary credit concern is the timing of COL’s return to stronger metrics, including the risk of sequestration and of a weaker economy that could constrain the company’s earnings and cash flow and slow a reduction in leverage. This concern is mitigated by COL’s solid margins and strong cash flow generation which were typically deployed towards share repurc

The U.S. Department of Defense announced the award of 10 separate contracts Thursday, worth a bit over $340 million in aggregate value. Boeing and Raytheon claimed about one third of the money on offer, apiece. As for other companies participating in Pentagon funding, these included the following:

Boeing's not the only one to benefit
In addition to the good news for Boeing, partners on the Dreamliner are also probably breathing a sigh of relief. Rockwell Collins (NYSE: COL  ) and General Electric (NYSE: GE  ) , both have a stake in the Dreamliner's success -- Rockwell supplies avionics equipment for the 787 and is expecting to increase production from four planes to 10 by the start of its fourth quarter, and GE supplies engines for the 787.

  • [By Katie Spence]

    Major profits ahead
With a price tag of $52 billion, the KC tanker contract is one of the Pentagon's largest weapons initiatives. Further, some analysts estimate that with future parts and maintenance, the contract worth could climb to $100 billion. This is great news for Boeing, but it's also great news for its subcontractors on the project -- Honeywell International (NYSE: HON  ) is supplying the auxiliary power unit and cabin pressure control unit, Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC  ) is supplying Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures, United Technologies' (NYSE: UTX  ) subsidiary Pratt & Whitney is supplying the engines, Rockwell Collins (NYSE: COL  ) is supplying the integrated display system, and Raytheonis supplying the digital radar-warning receiver. All in all, this is a major initiative for defense contractors, and good news for Boeing is good news for all.
